Maine PFAS Reporting Guide (PFAS in Products Program)
What Maine's PFAS in Products law requires, who must report, and what evidence you need to register products — a starting point, not legal advice.
Maine PFAS Reporting (PFAS in Products Program)
Maine's PFAS in Products law (38 M.R.S. §1614 et seq.) requires manufacturers of products containing intentionally added PFAS sold in Maine to notify and register those products with the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).
What the deadline is
Maine required an initial notification for products with intentionally added PFAS by January 1, 2023, and follows with annual registration (with an annual fee). Specific products may face use restrictions; Maine has been phasing restrictions on certain products such as food packaging, carpets and rugs, and ski wax. Confirm your product's current status and the annual registration deadline on the Maine DEP PFAS in Products page.
Who must report
You must report if you are a manufacturer of a product (or component) containing intentionally added PFAS that is sold or distributed in Maine. The scope is broad and covers most consumer product categories. Importers and private-label sellers acting as the manufacturer of record are included.
What evidence is required
For each reported product you need:
- Confirmation of intentionally added PFAS (supplier declaration)
- Chemical identity (name and CAS number) and concentration range
- The product category and description
- Records of which products/components the evidence covers
PFAS Compliance Desk helps you collect supplier declarations through a self-service portal and export a structured record — it does not register with Maine DEP for you.
This guide is a starting point, not legal advice. Confirm deadlines and scope on Maine DEP's PFAS in Products page before filing.
